EU in Singapore - Higher Education
Study in Europe Erasmus Mundus Programme
Why study in Europe?
The European Union offers varied and
interesting cultures and provides the very best conditions for
successful higher education studies in a challenging and friendly
atmosphere. During study breaks, students can enjoy the vibrant life of
modern Europe: contemporary music trends, modern dance,
avant-garde theatre, or fashion.
Great intellectual and technical
innovations have made Europe what it is today: a leader in
areas of the liberal arts, in design and fashion, in banking and
financing, in the media and in telecommunications technologies. The
large number of European Nobel Prize winners shows the European
continent’s tremendous capacity for excellence.
European universities are intensively
promoting their own internationalisation, so the number of students from
abroad is steadily rising. Already, more than 100,000 students from
Asia alone are currently studying at higher education
institutions throughout the European Union. Erasmus Mundus offers you
the opportunity to be one of them.

What is Erasmus Mundus?
The Erasmus Mundus programme is a co-operation and
mobility programme in the field of higher education which promotes the
European Union as a centre of excellence in learning around the world.
It supports European top-quality Masters Courses and enhances the
visibility and attractiveness of European higher education in third
countries. It also provides EU-funded scholarships for third country
nationals including Singapore participating in these Masters Courses, as
well as scholarships for EU- nationals studying in third countries. The
duration of the programme is five years (2004-2008) with a planned
financial envelope of 230 million Euro for the whole period.
Is Singapore eligible to participate?
Yes. The Erasmus Mundus Programme is open to third
countries including Singapore.
Who are the participants?
The Erasmus Mundus programme comprises four different
actions (see below) which invite participation from different groups.
Erasmus Mundus allows for participation by higher education
institutions, graduate students, scholars, higher education staff and
public and private bodies active in higher education (only Action 4).
What exactly does Erasmus Mundus offer?
The Erasmus Mundus programme comprises four concrete
actions.
ACTION 1 - Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses:
A number of selected Masters Courses constitute the
central component around which Erasmus Mundus is built. They are
high-quality integrated courses at post-graduate level offered by a
consortium of at least three universities in at least three different
European countries. Each Erasmus Mundus Masters course foresees a study
period in at least two of the three universities and leads to the award
of a recognised double, multiple or joint diploma.
ACTION 2 - Erasmus Mundus scholarships:
To allow students and scholars to participate in the
Masters courses the Erasmus Mundus programme offers a scholarship scheme
for third-country graduate students and scholars from the whole world.
The scholarship scheme addresses highly qualified individuals who come
to Europe to follow the Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses (students) or to
teach on the courses (lecturers).
If you would like to see the list of courses for which scholarships are available please follow this link: http://europa.eu.int/comm/education/programmes/mundus/projects_en.html
ACTION 3 - Partnerships
Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses selected under Action 1 also have the possibility of establishing partnerships with third-country higher education institutions. These partnerships allow for outgoing mobility of graduate EU students and scholars involved in the Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses.
ACTION 4 - Enhancing attractiveness:
Erasmus Mundus also supports projects aimed at enhancing the attractiveness of and the interest in European higher education. This aspect of the programme supports activities that improve the profile, the visibility and the accessibility of European higher education as well as issues crucial to the internationalisation of higher education, such as the mutual recognition of qualifications with third countries.
How much financial support does an Erasmus Mundus scholar receive?
Each student who has been awarded an Erasmus Mundus scholarship receives 21,000 € for a one-year course or 42,000 € for a two-year course. Scholars receive a grant of 13,000 €.
What do I have to do to participate in Erasmus Mundus?
The European Commission publishes calls for proposals relating to the different actions of the programme. These calls include all information regarding application procedures and deadlines.
Future calls for proposals for the different actions will be published on the following website: http://europa.eu.int/comm/education/programmes/mundus/index_en.html
